Preparing your house for sale

The summer season means garden parties, BBQs and visits to the beach, but it is also a time when people decide to put their house up for sale.

This week, we’ll be focusing on how you can ensure your house is prepped for viewings to increase your chance of sale!

  1. Huge clear out

This is extremely important as you want to ensure you are maximising the amount of space and storage in your house. If people can see your clutter, they won’t be able to see past it and the potential your house holds. You want to keep your home your home, but you don’t want it to be too overwhelming for the viewers!

  1. Maintenance checks

If you’ve got any maintenance issues that you’ve been meaning to see to for months, now is the time to do it! Maybe you have a bit of damp in the spare bedroom, or maybe you’ve got some creaky floorboards that need pinning down – get these issues seen to as you don’t want these flagged up by your viewers.

  1. Cosmetic work

As much as you probably find it a headache, giving your walls a new lick of paint and some sprucing up with new furniture and accessories, can really make a huge impact. It’s all about staging and catering for the many, not the few.

If you struggle to put yourself in the shoes of your potential viewers, get inspiration from platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram – these sites spark the imagination and can inspire you to create something completely new and different to what you may usually go for!

  1. Focus on features

Your home may have interesting features such as high ceilings or intricate architecture. Make sure you focus on these and draw attention to them. Buyers love features that set the house apart from other houses they’ve seen!

  1. Exterior

First impressions count! As you pull up to your house, really assess its exterior – are the walls crack free? Are the fascia boards clear? Are your windows and doors clean? Could the walls do with a fresh coat of paint? If you’ve got a front garden, pot some plants and cut the grass to give the best first impression!

Keep it clean, fresh, maximise space and storage and dot some scented candles around to make your house smell as beautiful as it looks! Good luck!

All in all, it’s important to make sure you leave a lasting impression and minimise any risk of off-putting your viewers with anything that is too niche or personal in your homes. You need to ensure your home appeals to the masses, not the few and isn’t offensive to anyone. But make sure it is still a reflection of you and your family!

Getting your BBQ ready for summer!

Hosting your big BBQ summer bashes is always fun, but the post-party clean up isn’t always as entertaining. We’re here today to help you ensure your BBQ is always gleaming and ready for the next garden party!

Once used, make sure you let your BBQ cool down for at least 30 minutes before removing the cooking grates on the BBQ itself. Use a BBQ grate cleaner to effectively degrease the grates, leaving it for a few minutes to soak before wiping down. Once you’ve done this, use a BBQ brush to ensure you’ve completely removed any remaining bits of stubborn food!

If you have a gas BBQ, this means you won’t have any soot or ash to tackle, so it usually leads to a quicker and easier cleaning process! Turn up the BBQ burners for a few minutes to burn off any remaining pieces of food which are stuck to the grill – as mentioned, these can be stubborn!

Make sure you turn the BBQ off completely, and then safely disconnect the gas. Remove the grill parts of your BBQ to ensure that there is nothing wedged around the burns to prevent your BBQ from giving uneven heat. Finish off with some grill cleaner and a wire brush to remove rust spots!

If a charcoal BBQ is what you own, you need to wait a longer amount of time before you begin cleaning it – so make sure the charcoals are fully cooled down before getting the cleaning solution out! Once they are cooled down sufficiently, remove the coals in preparation for the BBQ to be cleaned!

Now it’s time to empty the remaining ash and dust so you have a relatively clear surface to work with. Grab yourself a bottle of BBQ cleaning solution, your BQ brush and a sponge to really tackle the mess!

Now, rinse your charcoal BBQ to get rid of any soap suds and remaining food, and finally replace your BBQ grate! Now it’s all good to go and ready to use for next time.

Clean Sweep’s top 5 tips for clearing out the garden shed

Last week, we got into the spirit of summer and shared our top tips to help get your garden summer ready. This week, we’ll be sharing our top tips on how you can tidy up your shed in a hassle-free manner!

  1. Assess what you use on a regular basis and put these items to one side. This is the first step in sorting through the items you want to keep and the items you have no use for anymore.
  2. Don’t look at this project as one huge mammoth task; do it bit by bit – it can be quite overwhelming if your shed is looking a bit worse for wear and you try and do it all in one go!
  3. Take photos of items you don’t necessarily want anymore and upload them to social media and advertising websites like Gumtree and Ebay. Ensure the lighting and photo quality is of a good standard, as first impressions count!
  4. Can you use what you are considering to throw away for an alternative purpose? The planks of wood stacking up in the corner of the shed could be repurposed and make for some country-chic shelving!
  5. Out with the old! Get rid of any old items; whether it’s electrical items (such as old lawn mowers) or old tools that are looking a bit worse for wear – don’t just keep them for the sake of it! Separate what can be salvaged and repaired, and get rid of anything that can’t!

Is your garden summer ready?

Even though right now the sun isn’t necessarily blazing hot, we know it’s only around the corner! It’s important to do some groundwork (excuse the pun) now, so you can reap the benefits later.

Where to start?

Get your watering can out

It won’t be long until we will be feeling the hot sun rays on our bones – we’ve already had some dry and sunny spells, and although we assume this is good for your garden – it does mean that the grass and plants will become very dry. It is crucial to ensure they are well watered daily. Put five minutes aside every evening to do this. Watering your garden in the evening is always best as the water won’t dry in instantly (due to the sun soaking the water up).

Getting your grass in shape

Since it was deprived in the winter months, your grass is probably feeling slightly abandoned and is likely looking a bit worse for wear! Make sure you are feeding your grass with spring or summer lawn fertiliser. This will also help prevent weeds and moss from creeping up when you least expect it! Make sure you apply these fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when the weather is forecast to rain.

Talking of weeds…

It’s important to pull out the weeds by the roots – otherwise they will just keep popping up and your efforts will be wasted. Be cautious if you’re using weed killer – this can make the soil toxic and can hinder your plants to grow.

Get the lawn mower out of hibernation!

In the winter months, grass doesn’t grow at its normal rate. Now that summer is around the corner, it’s time to bring out the lawn mower that’s been sitting at the back of the shed for the last few months! Dust it off and get mowing! It’s important to never cut more than half the length of the grass in one go, as removing too much will result in the removal of much needed water and nutrition that the grass needs to grow!

Spruce up with furniture and accessories

If you’ve already got garden furniture, make sure you get some hot soapy water and give it a good scrub before even contemplating to use it! If it’s looking worse for wear and you can afford to, why not treat the garden to some new tables and chairs?

Alternatively, water features and accessories such as pretty fairy lights (which you can weave throughout trees and bushes for a great impact on summer evenings) and garden ornaments, can go a long way – taking your garden from amateur to professional in no time!

How to know when to throw it away

We’ve all been in the situation where we know we have to take the plunge and get rid of old items in order to make way for new, but how do we know what still has some life left in it and what we can definitely dispose of without later regret?

Consider the following points, and they will hopefully help make your mind up for you!

When was the last time you used it?

Whether it’s an item in your wardrobe or an item hiding at the back of your kitchen cupboard, we’ve all been in the state of mind that we’ll wear or use it at some point…but when? The next time you have a clear out, we guarantee it’ll still be there, gathering dust and taking up much needed storage space! Get rid!

How much do you like the item?

Do you have a sentimental connection to the item but don’t use it regularly or at all? Some instances are excusable, but if you don’t have that connection to it, ditch it!

Maybe you don’t even like the item in question anymore. That dress you bought in the sale three years ago, but you can’t bear to get rid of it because it was such a good bargain – put the feelings aside and donate it to the charity shop!

How does it function within the household?

The grey rug you bought for your living room a couple of years ago, once served its purpose in your grey colour schemed room… but now your living room is cream and the rug doesn’t match. What is it still doing in your attic, taking up valuable space?

The hay fever season is upon us!

Now that we’re well in the way of spring (which is lovely!), it does also mean we’re experiencing the early stages of hay fever. With hay fever affecting one in five people, it can really upset your everyday life. To put a stop to your runny noses and itchy eyes, we’ve got some top tips on how cleaning can help reduce its impact.

Wash your hands and body regularly

Now, we’re sure you don’t need to be told this, but a simple step to help keep your hay fever at bay, is to wash your hands and shower regularly. By doing this, you’re physically washing the pollen of and if you shower before bed, this will also keep your bedding pollen free. Once you’ve been outside for a long period of time, it’s a good idea to change into a fresh set of clothes.

Don’t forget to clean and hoover regularly

As hay fever is caused by the presence of allergens, pollen in this case, there’s not much that can be done when in an external environment. Indoors however, simply cleaning and hoovering regularly can help reduce the amount of allergens in your home and office.

Stock up on your tissue supply

While hay fever isn’t contagious, it can still make you really uncomfortable. That being said, with a good amount of tissues, wipes and sanitiser, you can successfully manage those germs. For those who live in a full household, or work in a busy office environment, this tip will definitely apply to you!

Keep your windows closed

To make sure pollen stays outside, it’s always best to keep your windows closed, and instead switch to fans or air conditioning for ventilation and temperature control. If you aren’t entirely sure of what kind of pollen you’re reacting to, then just know that most flowers pollinate between 5am and 9am. If you do want to open your windows, then try opening them towards the end of the day, this way there’ll be less pollen circulating.

Don’t dry your clothes outside

If you like to take advantage of good weather by hanging washing out to dry, then you should know that doing this can result in your clothes picking up pollen. Pollen on your clothes means you’ll have bad hay fever whenever you put them on.

Don’t forget your pets

They may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to hay fever, but your pet could be one of the biggest reasons behind your sneezing. Every time your pet goes outside, their fur collects pollen. Before you let them back into the house, brush their coat and hoover afterwards.

The fight against fur – Tips and tricks for cleaning pet hair

If you have a pet, then you’ll already know that removing pet hair from a carpet is an important, but difficult task. It seems to get everywhere, and there seems to be no way to stop it from happening.

Different methods, for different surfaces

As with everything in the cleaning world, not every method will work for all surfaces. To save your time, we’ve compiled a list of surfaces that may be in your home, and some information on how you can help them get fur free.

  1. Carpet

Ideally, you should aim to hoover more than a couple times a week. A good tip is to hoover each section of the house twice, but in different directions, getting rid of the fur in even the deepest parts of your carpets! If after this there’s still some remaining, try lightly running a pumice stone over the surface to remove any trapped fur, before hoovering for a final time.

  1. Hard Floors (Hardwood, laminated etc.) 

Out of all the surfaces, hard floors are one of the easiest. Make sure you stay clear of the hoover for these surfaces, as this will only end up moving the fur around. Instead, try using an electrostatic or microfiber dry mop, and it’ll be gone in no time

  1. Upholstery

With a dampened rubber glove, rub your hand over the furniture surface to gather the hair. Then, rinsing off the glove is all that’s left to do. Similarly, if you don’t have rubber gloves, you can use a slightly damp washcloth in circular motions. Both methods will release the fur, so you’ll then be free to hoover any remaining pieces on the floor after.

  1. Bedding

The easiest way to keep fur off your bedding is to keep them off your bed. For those of you who just can’t imagine kicking your furry friend off your bed, start by shaking your duvet outside. Once you’ve done this, you can then keep in mind all the tips from above. Just remember to use the correct cleaning method for the right surface.

Top tips

  1. Cover the places where your pet spends most of its time with blankets, or rugs.
  2. Brushing your pet will remove dead hair from its coat, meaning you can dispose of it before it has the chance to get on your carpets.
  3. Bathing your pet regularly can release any of its dead coat, making it much easier to brush and remove.
  4. Choose flooring that matches your pet. If you have a light coloured dog, then light flooring means you can get away with not having to clean every five minutes. Just make sure you don’t use this as an excuse to not clean regularly!

As you can see, there are a lot of methods for cleaning pet hair, but ultimately it’s whatever works best for you and your home. Let us know if there’s any other tips for pet hair removal that we’ve missed!


The guide to moving home

Moving house can be an exciting time, but it can also be very stressful. Between organising the legal paperwork and packing, time is limited. When moving house, you’re likely completely focused on the new one you’re moving into, rather than the one you’re leaving. Cleaning your old home doesn’t have to be an added stress factor, so we’ve made a list of the best advice all you home movers may need.

  • Firstly, try not to leave all the cleaning until the last minute. Aim to make a plan well in advance. Check you have all the necessary cleaning products at hand, like surface cleaner and cleaning cloths. Just make sure these items aren’t accidentally packed along with the rest of your belongings!
  • Tackle the hardest rooms first, like the bathroom and kitchen. These are usually the most difficult because they are used by everyone in the home. You don’t want to leave these until last, as you may run out of steam!
  • Try to clean the items you’re are going to take along with you as early as you can. Whilst there’s no problem with just packing them and cleaning at the new house, you probably won’t want to take the dust and dirt along with you.
  • Try to wait until all your belongings have been packed away onto the moving van to give the house a final cleaning. Starting to clean whilst everything is still hanging around is just going to make your life harder.
  • As always, you should ideally start to clean from top to bottom and back to front. Otherwise, you may get a clean surface dirty again.
  • Aim to do all your dry cleaning tasks first, like dusting and hoovering. It’s hard to mop and wash surfaces when there’s still dust and dirt on them!
  • If you don’t want to clean room-by-room, instead try cleaning by task. For some this may seem like a more complex method, but it can be much faster as you’ll already have certain equipment out.
  • You may find yourself throwing away all your old items, but don’t rush! A lot of the time you can use these items whilst you’re moving. An example of this would be old bed linens and towels, both of which can be used as dust sheets, or protective furniture wrappings.

Think about your new home. You wouldn’t want to move into somewhere that has lingering smells, dust and stains would you? Thoroughly cleaning your old house will help take away some stress from the new owners, something you’ll hopefully have in your new place!


Hello spring: Children’s play room

As the first month of spring is coming to an end, our spring clean-themed blog posts are also drawing to a close. This week’s blog will tie up the spring clean with a focus on the children’s playroom.

We all know how messy and cluttered the playroom can get, and that’s ok – it’s what it is supposed to be. But there is a line we mustn’t cross, and that’s where the room gets so messy and cluttered, that it becomes hazardous and unhygienic for our children.

As we recommended with our previous spring clean-themed blogs, it’s always best to assess what is clutter and what is there for a purpose. There’s no need to completely pack away each and every toy your child has out, so start by packing away toys they play with less often.

It’s wise to pack these toys into an easy to access storage container, in case your child decides they want to play with them – the last thing you want is not being able to easily get your hands on the toys and have an unhappy child on your hands! We’ve all been there!

A transparent container is a good option, as you can easily identify what toy is in which container. Another idea is to label the containers with pictures, as this will help your children identify the toys – if they are too young to read.

Now that we’ve decided what should go where and what can be packed away, banish those pesky germs and bacteria build up with some anti-bacterial surface cleaner. Make sure products used are not left lying around in the playroom – even if you do store them on high shelves.

It’s also wise to wipe down all toys with anti-bacterial wipes on a regular basis to maintain a high hygiene standard and prevent germs from spreading.

Why not introduce a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning routine which involved the children? This doesn’t have to be the in-depth clean we’re talking about in this blog post, but could just be a general clean-up. Encourage your children to help clean up the playroom by putting on their favourite music while doing so. This will help to make the process enjoyable and fun – it’s also great bonding time!

Leading Welsh cleaning company wins substantial student accommodation contract

A student accommodation project in the SA1 development area of Swansea has enlisted the services of a local cleaning company, to provide its professional cleaning services as the second phase of the development begins.

The student accommodation project recently entered its second phase. Phase one of the project saw the construction of a 375 bedroom student accommodation building, with the second phase seeing an extension of a 340 room build.

The ongoing building work at Morfa Road, Swansea, which is due for completion in summer 2017 by construction company Watkin Jones, has called on the services of Clean Sweep to complete full commercial cleaning in and around the building site.

Clean Sweep has been contracted to work simultaneously with Watkin Jones during the ongoing building work, ensuring the building and surrounding areas are cleaned in preparation for each stage of the build, to meet required health and safety standards. Clean Sweep will also conduct its deep cleaning service within the new 340 room phase two development; 329 rooms are cluster bedrooms, with the remaining 11 being studios.

Due to an increase in substantial and long-term commercial contracts, Clean Sweep has increased its staff base to meet demand.
