We’ve put together some handy tips and tricks for cleaning your bedroom in five simple steps.
YOU WILL NEED:
- A duster
- Microfiber cloths
- Spray bottle of water / cleaner
- Vacuum cleaner
1 – DUSTING IS A MUST
Although dusting is often underestimated, it is an absolute must when keeping your bedroom clean. Regular dusting eliminates the airborne deposits on your furniture, so ensure to dust bedside cabinets, lamp shades and the ceiling fan. To clean the ceiling fan, gently wipe the edges of the blades from centre to tip with a damp cleaning cloth. If there is a lot of dust accumulated on the blades, place an old towel on the floor or bed below to reduce runaway dust.
2 – SPILLS AND MARKS
Bedside cabinets may need the most attention of all of your bedroom furniture. But it’s still not a difficult place to clean.
Remove each item from the furniture, and clean individually. Wipe the cabinet’ surface utilising a duster or a microfiber cloth. Lightly spritz spills with water or a suitable cleaning product, applying pressure on the cloth for tough spills. When it is clean, wipe the sides and legs, and replace the items.
If working with wooden bedroom furniture, create a home remedy of equal parts of:
- Denatured alcohol
- Olive oil
- Gum turpentine
- Strained juice of lemon
Dip the cloth in water, to which mild detergent is added. Wring the cloth fully, ensuring it is only moist, and wipe the sticky area gently. Immediately after, wipe with a dry soft cloth to remove any moisture from your furniture.
3 – MIRROR MIRROR
Eliminate streaks with a spritz of glass cleaner, wiping with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. If a homemade remedy is more suited, create a solution by mixing one part white vinegar and four parts water. Be sure to rub the glass in a circular motion to remove all spots, followed by vertical strokes and horizontal swipes.
4 – REFRESH BEDDING
Be sure to strip linens at least every two weeks and wash in the hottest water recommended on the care labels. Wipe down the headboard with a cloth and cleaning solution appropriate to the bed’s material. If the mattress requires spot cleaning, avoid excessive use of water, as this can encourage mold. Ensure the mattress is fully dry before redressing the bed with mattress pad and linens.
5 – CLEAN THE FLOORS
For a hardwood floor, a weekly sweeping with a dry mop or broom is suitable. If you are considering a deeper clean, a floor sealed with polyurethane can be damp-mopped. On floors treated with other sealants, utilise a cleaner or polish and wax mop. Rub in the direction of the grain.
If your bedroom is carpeted, be sure to vacuum weekly, utilising a crevice tool attachment to reach corners and edges.
