6 New Year’s cleaning resolutions for a sparkling home all year round

The New Year offers a great chance to start afresh, and your cleaning routine is no exception! From daily tasks to setting aside time for areas which may become neglected, we’ve put together 10 resolutions for 2018…

1 – Shower power:

If left for a while, cleaning the shower can sometimes be an unpleasant and often daunting task. The easiest way to combat this is to spritz the shower with a daily shower cleaner every day, to keep shower and tub surfaces free of soap scum and hard-water stains.

2 – Laundry days:

A pile of laundry waiting for your when you get home from work is never appealing – especially when it results in you setting aside time for this task on weekends! The easiest way to tackle laundry is to set specific days of the week aside for laundry washing and ironing. This will reduce the overall load, and make the task quick and easy.

3 – Dust away:

Dusting on a weekly basis is the perfect way to keep your home clean all year round. Dusting is especially important if you suffer from any type of allergy, as this will help keep reactions at bay. Remember, dust from the top down, and be sure to shake the duster outdoors regularly to avoid build up and spreading dust further.

4 – Look up:

Ceilings can easily be neglected when it comes to cleaning. But it’s important to look up sometimes! When hoovering carpets and your furniture, take time out to hoover the ceiling, especially the corners where dust can easily gather. Also – be aware of light fittings. These are harbingers of dust, and even though they are hard to reach, it is important to give them some attention from time to time!

5 – Wash curtains:

Curtains may not seem like a priority when it comes to cleaning, but it is essential to take down curtains and wash them. For regular maintenance, vacuum your curtains using the soft brush attachment to remove light dust and dirt. If your curtains are lightweight, they can be washed in the washing machine – but take care with washing instructions. Delicate materials should be hand washed, and curtains made from heavy fabrics are usually steam cleaned to prevent a lengthy drying process.

6 – Super storage:

The key to organisation in any room of the house is storage. Why not take the New Year as an opportunity to de-clutter your rooms, using storage options to organise different spaces. Remember that paper and cardboard storage containers are susceptible to mould if stored in damp areas, whilst also being more vulnerable to insects or pests. Therefore, it is best to use plastic bins, boxes and bags, which are sturdier, air tight and pest-proof.

Cleaning your artificial Christmas tree in three easy steps

It seems that more families than ever have opted to take a modern approach to giving their home some holiday spirit. Artificial Christmas trees are not only more environmentally friendly, but they’re also re-usable, saving families valuable money every year. Perhaps one of the few downsides to artificial trees, is that as a result of being kept in storage all year round they are prone to collecting dirt and dust.  Here are Clean Sweep’s tips to keeping your artificial Christmas tree looking new and vibrant all through the holiday period:

Salt

Although not a common cleaning tool in the 21st century, salt can be extremely useful for removing pesky built up grime.

Once you have removed the tree from the bag or box you were using to store it, carefully take the tree apart into sections and place those individual parts in a black plastic bag, add a couple of handfuls of granulated salt, and shake vigorously. Proceed to remove the sections of tree from the bag and lightly dust off any excess salt with your hand or a soft cloth.
Note: This tip is only advised if your tree comes apart in individual sections, attempting to fit and vigorously shake a smaller tree in a plastic bag could cause damage, and breakages.

Vacuuming

Dust is the most common cause of an artificial tree not looking it’s best. With the majority of families storing their trees in the attic, it is almost inevitable that at least some dust is going to collect. We believe the most effective way to remove this build-up of unwanted dust, without damaging your tree is through careful and streamlined motions using a hand vacuum.  If you do not own a hand vacuum, the suction tube component of a standard vacuum, with the soft bristle attachment, will do.

Working from top to bottom, approaching each branch from the side, proceed to vacuum the entire tree, paying careful attention to the exterior of the tree. It is important to approach each branch from the side, as vacuuming the tree from any other angle, could cause the branches to be sucked in to the vacuum, resulting in them snapping, causing damage to your tree and clogging the vacuum.

Wiping

Once you have removed the grime and dirt with the salt technique and vacuumed up any dust, it’s time to give your tree a final clean to completely revitalise it and bring back that vibrant green glow.

Begin by filling a bucket with a soapy combination of washing up liquid and hot water. We recommend using a soft cloth to achieve the best results from this technique, however you can use a regular sponge, so long as you are gentle and avoid the scoured side. Soak the cloth or sponge in the soapy mixture, and firmly wring out any liquid to get the cloth as dry as possible. Gently hold the individual branches in one hand, whilst simultaneously wiping them clean, being careful not to remove any bristles.

Once thoroughly cleaned, leave the tree to dry naturally, before decorating and displaying.

Foot stuck into chewing gum on street

Remove chewing gum from carpets and clothing with these easy steps

Chewing gum is an old time foe to carpets and clothing: it’s never nice when you or your child accidently sits or steps in gum! The good news is chewing gum is easy to remove from clothes and carpets. We’ve put together our top tips to give you a helping hand.

CLOTHING:

  1. Freezing Method – The easiest method for removing chewing gum from garments is freezing. Firstly, take the item and place in a freezer bag, being sure that the chewing gum doesn’t stick to the bag. Then, seal the bag correctly and place the item in the freezer, leaving it in this cold environment for a minimum of two hours. When removed, peel the chewing gum off the clothing as soon as possible to prevent it from warming up and reattaching. If this is tricky, use a blunt knife to remove the gum from the clothes to prevent damage. Be sure to angle the knife away from you.
  1. Lemon Juice – Lemon juice is another cheap alternative to removing gum from clothing, and it causes no damage. Simply soak the garment in lemon juice and scrape the gum with a blunt knife or spoon. Wash the garment as soon as possible following applying lemon juice.
  1. Vinegar – Vinegar can be used for many different cleaning purposes, but it can also be used to remove gum. Soak the item in hot vinegar, and brush or scrape the gum off carefully with a blunt tool.

CARPETS:

  1. Hairdryer – For this method you will need a hairdryer and a plastic bag. Aim the dryer at the affected area and wait a while until the gum is soft. Then slowly scrape it off with the plastic bag. Remove the remaining stain with laundry powder and a little bit of water, and scrub it away gently.
  1. Ice - The first way you can remove it is by using the ice method. For this you will need some ice, and something to scrape away the gum after. Put the ice in the bag and place it on the area affected and wait until the gum hardens. When it has, slowly peel it off with a spoon or a knife. Often, a stain can remain, but you can remove the remainder by gently scrubbing it away with some water, laundry powder and a sponge.
  1. Carpet cleaning – If you are having difficulty removing the gum from your carpets following using these methods, it may be time to call in the professionals. A carpet cleaning machine can remove all sorts of tough marks and stains. Not only will the gum be removed, but you’ll have clean and fluffy carpets again!

Commercial cleaning

How a commercial cleaning company can benefit your business

Although cleaning your commercial property yourself can be cheaper, professional cleaning has many pros. Here are a few reasons to why you should choose a commercial cleaning company like Clean Sweep, and why it can be safer for you.

MORE EFFICIENT

Commercial cleaning saves your business time and energy, as it is more efficient than cleaning your premises yourself. Commercial cleaning companies can provide the correct cleaning equipment, coupled with an in depth and professional knowledge.

Often, what you think is clean may not be, and professional cleaners can clean to a much higher standard to ensure your facilities sparkle, whilst eliminating germs and bacteria. No matter how hard you scrub and scrub, sometimes professional help is needed to ensure your office is healthier for you and your employees!

SAFER

The most important reason for choosing commercial cleaning is that there are certain chemicals and cleaning products that are unsafe for domestic cleaners. Most commercial cleaners are thoroughly trained, and are knowledgeable of what protective gear to use when handling certain chemicals.

Sometimes people may mix cleaning products thinking it will make a powerful cleaning product and clean surfaces to a better standard, but this can actually be toxic and harmful to the human body. It is important to be aware that when cleaning products are used, they can dissolve into the skin and cause nasty reactions. This can be very bad for your health, and calling on the professionals is therefore much safer for your health and facility.

How to prepare for a Spooktacular Hallow-clean

While Halloween can be a fun time of the year – whether you’re trick or treating, hosting a party of your own or carving a pumpkin – its aftermath can be messy. It’s always wise to consider the cleaning process in advance, and in this post we have highlighted some handy tricks…

EGGS ON HOUSES AND CARS?

Unfortunately, one of the least fun aspects of Halloween (for adults, that is!), is the cleaning up of thrown eggs on houses and cars.

The best way to clean up such mess on the house is to use a strong alkaline cleaner and warm water. It is extremely important that HOT water is avoided, as high temperatures will congeal the egg’s proteins, making it even stickier. Scrub the area gently with alkaline cleaner and warm water as soon as possible.

If your car is the target, use a detergent (neutral-pH) and a microfiber car cleaning cloth. Be sure to avoid using harsh cleaning cloths – scrubbing sponges, for example – or detergents as this will damage the car’s top coat. First, thoroughly hose the area below the egg, and gently hose the egg off the car. Then, use the detergent and car cloth while adding slight pressure to fully remove the stain, followed by rinsing and drying.

SILLY STRING

Silly string can be very difficult to clean, especially in abundance. Most will be removed with a simple soap and water solution, but you can then eliminate further residue with a cotton ball or swab.

LIPSTICK AND OIL-BASED HALLOWEEN MAKEUP

Face painting is the perfect way to spook up a Halloween outfit, with popular options being white ghoulish paint and fake blood, or striking green wrinkly witch skin. However, such paint can cause stubborn stains if they fleck on to unintended surfaces. Luckily, there is a simple process to follow to remove stubborn lipstick and oil-based makeup stains.

First, dab a small amount of makeup remover or rubbing alcohol onto the affected area. Carefully work the solution into the area with a small brush or cloth, ensuring only light strokes from the edges of the stain to center. Pinching lightly in an upward motion – once you have reached the stain’s center – will help to further remove the stain. Then wait five minutes, and if the stain persists repeat the steps.

PUMPKIN STAINS

Nothing screams Halloween more than pumpkin carving! However, as fun as it can be, the slimy pumpkin pulp can create a lot of mess, staining carpets or clothing.

If the area is carpeted, firstly pick up the scattered pulp with paper towels, but be careful not to rub it into fibers. Then, blot the area with white vinegar, and sprinkle with baking soda. Be sure to leave this dry for a few hours, and finish with vacuuming. If the stains persist, use an enzyme-based stain penetrator and massage into the stain, and leave for a few hours.

If the stained area is an item of clothing, again use an enzyme-based stain remover and leave to soak. If this doesn’t work, massage in some laundry detergent. Be sure to wash the item on the safest hottest temperature.

Most importantly, Happy Halloween!

Hotel Chambermaid Making Guest Bed

Hello, spring: The bedroom clean

The bedroom is the place you want to go to feel relaxed and calm – but the shoes on the floor and the dust accumulating on your chandelier isn’t going to help you do that!

Prior to starting the cleaning process, it’s a good idea to open the windows to allow fresh air to circulate. This will also boost your motivation, as stuffy rooms can lead to tiredness.

As with any room we conduct a deep clean in, let’s begin by clearing away the clutter and put items back where they belong. While you’re at it, any items of clothing that you can’t remember the last time you wore, donate them to a charity or clothing bank!

Once everything is back in its rightful place, begin by stripping your bed. Even flip the mattress to bring it back to life! Put your sheets in the wash and dress your bed with fresh bedding.

Get your vacuum cleaner and ensure all dust is removed from skirting boards and hard to reach areas (for example, behind your bed and bedside tables).

Take surface cleaning solution and wipe all surfaces to get rid of dust and build-up of bacteria and germs. It will also make your room smell nice and fresh! Additionally, make sure you treat your windows and mirrors to a good scrub – you want to see them sparkling!

Next? The floors. If you have a wooden floor, grab a mop and get mopping – if you have a carpet, grab your vacuum and get vacuuming! If you use your bedroom to get ready in the morning, you’ll notice your floors accumulate dust from hair products, makeup and perfumes.

Now, let’s focus on your curtains and blinds – these are often forgotten about. Take your vacuum cleaner and attach the brush it comes with. Dust and dirt congregates here due to the little attention being paid to it on a regular basis.

There we have it! Our top tips to get your bedroom sparkling and back to its relaxing, calm environment.

If you just haven’t got the time to do this, give Clean Sweep a call. We’d be happy to discuss our domestic cleaning service with you!
